They were most probably constructed at the end of XIII century by prince Bolko I. There were four gates leading to the town: from Bolków, from Legnica, from Złotoryja and from Strzegom, the last one reinforced by a tower. Within the years 1510-1536, due to the development of firearms the fortification was modernised and the second exterior ring of walls approximately 400 meters in diameter were added. The most risky places were supported with artillery bastions from which it was possible to fire cannons and hand guns. Up to the present only minor pieces survived. Of the best condition is the artillery bastion called the Angel’s Castle. During the renovation between WW I and WW II there were six penitential crosses fixed into its walls. Another piece of the artillery bastion you can find at the back of Old People’s Home (The Senior Square). In the second part of XIX century due to the extension of the town the battlements were gradually pulled down and the town gates were completely eliminated.
